Bible 102

CLASS OVERVIEW

A NOTE TO DEDICATED TEACHERS:

WHAT DOES THIS WORKBOOK COVER?

This workbook is the second of a two part series on the Bible
(The Bible 101 & 102). The goal of these two books is threefold:
[1] To help the students understand what the Bible is (i.e. what is special about it, what sets it apart from all other books) and why they need to give it their special attention.
[2] To help them prepare to answer the attacks that are being made against the Bible today.
[3] To teach them how to study the Bible for themselves.

WHAT ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES?

In this second workbook we have one basic objective: to teach the students how to study the Bible. We cover everything from developing a daily reading schedule to defining difficult words to outlining the chapter of a book. After two introductory lessons, this class has two basic parts.
[1] First, there are a series of Bible study skills to teach the students. Each includes a challenge to help them implement the skill they have just learned.
[2] The second part of the class challenges the students to write a brief commentary on a New Testament epistle. This exercise incorporates all of the skills they developed in the first part of the class.

The goal is to send the students away from this class with the confidence that they can study the Bible for themselves and give them some basic skills they need to do it!

HOW DO I TEACH THIS MATERIAL?
[1]As with all the workbooks in the Get Them Talking Series, our goal is to generate class discussion. Try to avoid lecturing your students and engage them in a discussion of the material.
[2]Many of the lessons incorporate team projects. Please do not pass over these. Give the students time in class to work in small groups, i.e discussing issues, answering questions and making lists. Getting them involved will increase the amount of material they retain.
[3]This class will require some special resources. We will be teaching the students how to use Bible dictionaries, commentaries, concordances, computer programs, etc. Some churches will have libraries with the resources readily available. When that is not the case, you will have to call upon families of your students and others in the congregation to help provide these books for the class.
[4]You will find that we allow a good bit of time for research projects to be done in class. This will allow you to help the students as they begin using these Bible study tools for the first time. Your guidance through the process will be very important over the course of this class.
